Tired of wasting hours watching lengthy YouTube videos and podcasts without knowing if they’re worth your time?

In this article, I’ll show you the top 5 AI-powered tools that will help you save loads of time by summarizing YouTube videos and transcribing audio files.

These tools will allow you to quickly find out what a long video is all about before deciding whether to watch the whole thing.

Let’s dive in!

TL;DR Summary

This article discusses 5 tools to help you save time watching YouTube videos and podcasts. The tools use AI to create video summaries, and transcribe audio files.

Summaries are delivered in different formats, and some tools allow you to customize your prompts to change the summary output.

Other notable features include:

  • Copy YouTube video transcript on mobile
  • Split long transcripts into chunks
  • Discover new content
  • Save notes & highlights
  • Save to note taking apps
  • Share with friends

Summarize.tech

summarize.tech

Summarize.tech is an AI-powered tool that creates video summaries for long YouTube videos such as:

  • podcasts
  • interviews
  • documentaries
  • lectures
  • movies

Powered by Chat GPT’s latest GPT 3.5 turbo language model, the tool returns results for many videos instantly (because previously searched videos are stored in their database.)

Even longer new videos (I’ve tested up to 3 hours long) only take around 5 to 6 seconds to summarize.

Summaries are broken down into hour-long chunks, and each chunk is further broken down into five-minute sections, complete with timestamps that link to the video at that time step.

On the home page, there is a list of recently summarized videos, which can be used to find new and interesting content.

The free version allows a few videos per day, while the paid version costs only $10 per month and has no daily limits, allowing up to 500 videos to be summarized each month.

PROS

Summarize.tech is web-based, meaning it can be used on a mobile phone via a browser, and there is no need for a Chat GPT account, as the API call cost is covered for free version users.

CONS

However, the tool does not work if there is no transcript available for the YouTube video, and the free plan has a rate limit of around five to ten videos per day.

Feather AI

Feather AI

Feather AI is a powerful tool that helps you turn any YouTube video or MP3 audio file into a summary.

Unlike other tools, Feather AI transcribes the audio into text and then creates the summary, resulting in a more accurate and detailed summary.

The summaries are sent directly to your inbox, making them easily accessible and referenceable.

There are three ways to generate summaries:

Additionally, a Notion Integration is coming soon, which will allow you to direct Feather AI’s summaries straight to your Notion database, making it easy to accumulate summaries in one place.

PROS

One of the key advantages of Feather AI is that it works on YouTube videos that do not have a transcript. Their app transcribes the audio for you, saving you time and effort.

Another advantage is the well-formatted summary that you receive in your inbox. The summary includes the video title, length, estimated reading time, bottom line up front, key points with bullet points, and a short paragraph for each section.

The summary’s clear and concise format makes it easy to quickly understand the video’s content without having to watch the entire thing.

CONS

On the downside, Feather AI’s audio transcription process can slow down the summary generation, taking up to 10 minutes for the summary to reach your inbox.

There is a free version which includes 120 minutes per month and if you want to go paid to increase the number of minutes per month that goes up to $13.99 for 6000 minutes/month.

The tool is more expensive than other options like Summarize.tech, as the pricing is based on the number of minutes summarized per month.

However, the convenience and accuracy of Feather AI’s summaries make it a valuable tool for anyone looking to quickly and easily understand the content of YouTube videos and audio files.

Glasp – YouTube Summary with ChatGPT

Glasp

Glasp is a browser extension that aims to make note-taking and website annotation more seamless. It allows users to add highlights and take notes directly on any website, and those notes are automatically saved to the user’s Glasp homepage.

The extension integrates with popular note-taking apps like Obsidian, Notion, and ROAM, making it a handy tool for those who frequently take notes while browsing the web.

One of the standout features of Glasp is the YouTube Summary with ChatGPT extension. This tool allows users to quickly access a summary of any YouTube video they’re watching, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI technology.

The Chrome extension is 100% free and provides a fast and easy way to get summaries of long YouTube videos like podcasts, interviews, documentaries, lectures, and even movies.

The summarization process is simple and straightforward.

After installing the extension, users can go to any YouTube video and click on the cog icon to access the settings page. From there, they can customize the theme, copy formats, language, and prompt.

The default prompt is “summarize the following,” but users can customize it to get more comprehensive summaries. For example, the prompt can include bullet points, detailed explanations, and examples for each key takeaway.

Example Prompt:

Summarize the text and use bullet points for all key takeaways. Include detailed explanations and examples for each takeaway.

Once the prompt is set, users can expand the transcript window and click on the ChatGPT button to get the summary. The summarization process is fast and generally takes only a few seconds to complete.

PROS

One of the most significant pros is that it’s 100% free, and users can customize the prompt to get the desired results.

It also includes web highlighting and note-taking features, making it a versatile tool for browsing the web.

CONS

However, the extension requires the use of ChatGPT, which can be rate-limited at times depending on how busy the servers are.

Additionally, the browser extension does not work on mobile browsers, so users must use it on their desktop computers.

Finally, the transcript sent to ChatGPT is cut off after about an hour, so users need to chunk longer videos into sections and summarize each section separately for the full summary.

Online Video Transcript Generator

Online Video Transcript Generator

The Online Video Transcript Generator is a useful tool that can quickly extract the full transcript from any YouTube video.

To use this tool, simply paste the YouTube video URL into the search box and click on “transcript”.

The tool will then extract the text from the video, and you’ll be able to see the full transcript on the screen.

What’s great about this tool is that all the sentences are clickable, so you can easily navigate to a specific part of the video by clicking on the sentence in the transcript.

This is especially helpful if you’re on a mobile device and you want to grab the transcript and summarize it using a tool like ChatGPT

With this online video transcript generator, you can easily access and use the transcript from any YouTube video, making it a valuable resource for anyone who needs to quickly summarize a video or extract important information from it.

ChatGPT Splitter

ChatGPT Splitter

ChatGPT Splitter is a powerful tool that is incredibly useful for anyone who is dealing with transcripts that are longer than an hour.

This tool enables users to split transcripts into smaller chunks that can be processed by ChatGPT, which only allows you to process up to roughly 3000 words per request

Firstly, ChatGPT Splitter allows you to define your chunk size (12,000 characters is equivalent to roughly 2000 – 3000 words.)

This means that you can easily break down transcripts that are longer than an hour and then feed each chunk into ChatGPT for processing.

Once you have chunked down the transcript, you can use ChatGPT to generate a summary of each chunk, which will help you identify the key takeaways from the entire transcript.

This is incredibly useful if you’re dealing with lengthy transcripts that require careful analysis.

Here is the prompt I use:

Summarize [CHUNK x/x] and use bullet points for all key takeaways. First include a short summary, then a bold heading for each key takeaway with detailed explanations, facts and examples included for each key takeaway.

One of the standout features of ChatGPT Splitter is its ease of use. To get started, all you need to do is paste the transcript into the tool and select your desired chunk size.

The tool will then automatically generate the chunks for you, which you can copy and paste into ChatGPT for processing.

This makes it incredibly user-friendly, even for those who are not tech-savvy.

Additionally, the interface is clean and straightforward, making it easy to navigate and find the specific features that you need.

Another great feature of ChatGPT Splitter is that it works with a variety of file types, including:

  • Code
  • PDFs
  • Images
  • .docx files

This means that you can easily process a wide range of documents and extract key insights from them.

Additionally, the tool is incredibly fast and efficient, which makes it perfect for busy professionals who don’t have a lot of time to waste.

In addition to its snipping and summarization capabilities, Snipd also has a personalized TikTok-style audio feed that shows you podcast highlights based on your interests. If you hear something you like, you can save the snip or continue directly with the episode that the highlight is from.
